SAFE-T-LEADER Program Outline
"This is not a course you attend and forget. Every session is designed to confront, develop and transform. By the time you leave on Day Three you will have a precise understanding of who you are as a safety leader — and a concrete plan for who you are going to become."
"Every safety leadership program in the world will teach you what a good safety leader does. SAFE-T-LEADER© goes further. It develops who a great safety leader is — the beliefs, the behaviours, the competencies, and the character that produce sustained safety performance. Because behaviour without belief is compliance. And compliance fades the moment nobody is watching."
What Participants Leave With
By the time participants leave on Day Three they hold three things that most safety leaders never have at the same time: a precise understanding of their own leadership profile, a set of highly developed transformational communication competencies, and a concrete 90-day plan for applying everything they have learned within their own organisation.
The Program — Day by Day
Day One
The Leader in the Mirror
Day One begins with the most confronting question in safety leadership — not what am I doing wrong, but who am I as a leader, and what does that mean for the people who follow me?
Participants are introduced to the Full Range Leadership® Model and the nine TSL constructs — from The Invisible Man to The Missionary — and begin the process of honestly locating themselves across that spectrum.
The afternoon works through all seven pillars of the ATLAS© Personal Leadership Framework — a structured self-assessment journey that gives each participant a precise, personalised picture of their leadership tendencies, motivations, emotional intelligence, strengths, challenges, capacity for change, and implementation capability.
Day One ends with individual reflection and journaling. Participants leave with one question: What did I see in the mirror today that I have not seen before?
Day Two
The Leader in Action
Day Two is where knowledge becomes skill.
The morning is devoted entirely to Transformational Communication — the most powerful safety leadership tool available to any leader at any level of any organisation. Participants learn the theory, observe demonstration, and then practise with each other under structured feedback conditions. This is not role play for its own sake — it is the development of a specific, repeatable communication competency that participants will use in every safety interaction for the rest of their career.
The afternoon brings Psychological Safety into focus — how The Carer construct creates the conditions where every other TSL competency becomes more powerful, and how its absence quietly undermines every safety initiative regardless of its technical quality.
Day Two concludes with an Anatomies of Disaster session — an in-depth exploration of a major industrial disaster through the lens of the TSL framework, identifying the leadership constructs that were absent, the cultural conditions that made failure inevitable, and the specific interventions that could have changed the outcome.
Day Three
The Leader Who Builds Culture
Day Three zooms out from the individual to the organisation.
The morning introduces High Reliability Organizing — the five hallmarks that characterise organisations that consistently perform safely under pressure — and Collective Mindfulness, the organisational state that makes permanent sensitivity to operations possible. Participants map their own organisation against the Transformational Safety® Culture Maturity Framework and see clearly the gap between where their culture currently sits and where it needs to be.
The afternoon is devoted entirely to implementation. Each participant develops a detailed, specific, measurable 90-day Transformational Safety® Leadership plan for their return to the workplace. These plans are presented to the group, refined through peer feedback, and become the foundation for the post-program coaching support that follows.
Participants leave not just with new knowledge — but with a plan, a commitment, and the capability to execute it.
What Participants Leave With
SAFE-T-LEADER© is designed for leaders who are serious about safety — not as a metric to be managed, but as a value to be lived.
It is suitable for:
- Senior executives and board members
- Safety managers and HSE professionals
- Operations and site managers
- Team leaders and supervisors in high-risk environments
It is equally powerful for participants from any high-risk industry — mining, petrochemicals, aviation, construction, defence, emergency services, and healthcare.
The maximum program size is fifteen participants. This is deliberate. SAFE-T-LEADER© is not a conference — it is an intensive developmental experience that requires every participant to be seen, challenged, and developed as an individual.
Delivery and Support
SAFE-T-LEADER© is delivered over three consecutive full days. Where possible, David G Broadbent conducts a pre-program consultation with the sponsoring organisation to identify specific cultural context and participant needs — ensuring that the program speaks directly to the realities of your industry and your workplace.
Following the program, each participant receives an individual debrief report. A summary organisational report is provided to sponsoring leadership. A 90-day follow-up coaching session is available to support implementation.
Facilitator
SAFE-T-LEADER© is designed and facilitated exclusively by David G Broadbent — internationally recognised Safety Psychologist, creator of the Transformational Safety® System, and the originator of the world's only safety-specific leadership framework founded within Full Range Leadership Theory.
David has delivered safety leadership programs on six continents — in mining operations, petrochemical plants, aviation environments, defence facilities, emergency services, and construction sites. His programs are known for being intellectually rigorous, highly participative, and genuinely transformational.
Most safety leaders have never truly seen themselves as a leader. They know their systems, their procedures, their metrics. But they have never stood in front of a mirror and asked the hardest question of all — who am I when someone's life depends on my leadership? That is where SAFE-T-LEADER© begins. And by Day Three, they have an answer — and a plan.
